Congress considers “Protect Your Pharmacy Week”

(Drug Topics) A U.S. House of Representatives committee will consider a bill designating April 13 through April 17 “Protect Your Pharmacy Week.”
House Resolution 326, sponsored by Rep. Michael McMahon (D-NY), recognizes “the growing trend of crimes against retail pharmacies and the need for pharmacists in all practice settings to take steps to improve pharmacy safety and security.” Read more
FDA reversal OKs morphine painkiller for dying

(AP) A liquid morphine painkiller given by family caregivers to dying patients can remain on the market, federal regulators have decided after hearing protests over their decision to remove it. The Food and Drug Administration had announced last week that it was ordering manufacturers to stop making 14 medications including the liquid morphine. All were developed so long ago they had never received FDA approval. Read more

GAO: No evidence-based need for third class of drugs

(Drug Topics) A recent study by the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) said there is little evidence to support a need for a new class of behind-the-counter drugs that would fall between prescription (Rx) and OTC (over-the-counter) drugs. Read more

Novation joins McKesson’s OneStop program

(Drug Topics) Novation, a healthcare contracting services company based in Texas, has signed on to provide McKesson Corp’s OneStop Generics Program to their mutual health-system customers. McKesson said its OneStop program helps pharmacies to “take full advantage of the significant pricing advantage of generic drugs through a dedicated team of generics specialists and direct access to the latest product information and industry news.” Read more
Pfizer returning ED device to pharmacies

(Drug Topics) The Caverject Impulse Dual Chamber System, a drug delivery device used to treat erectile dysfunction that was withdrawn by the manufacturer, will return to pharmacy shelves, according to Pfizer, Inc. Pfizer could not say when it will resume production of the device, which it said it withdrew “several months ago.” Read more
