N.J. pharmacy develops tech-training program

The New Jersey Board of Pharmacy has approved a training program for pharmacy technicians developed by Wedgewood Pharmacy. After completing the 14-module, eight-hour program, each technician must complete an exam covering state rules and statutes, HIPAA regulations, and the company’s own standards.
The company also requires monthly in-service training for all of its technicians. In 2006, Wedgewood, which claims to be the largest veterinary compounding pharmacy in the country, was warned by the FDA for its compounding practices. Wedgewood was also a defendant in the Thompson v. Western State Medical Center case that challenged the FDA’s jurisdiction over compounding.
