Smoking Cesseation
February 25, 2007
One part of This article stood out to me.
…new antidepressant prescription options marketed as Zyban and Wellbutrin found a niche with would-be quitters, possibly decreasing their usage of OTC products. Did prescriptions kill the OTC star, or are other factors at work to dissuade customers from trying OTC quitting aids?
I’ve filled several scripts for Chantix in our little pharmacy. 9 out of 10 of them were covered by the patients prescription drug plan. Often with Co-Pays in the 10-20 dollar range. That’s 1/4 of what most of the OTC products cost.
Are there other factors besides the out-of-pocket price to the consumers? Do the Doctors see a higher success rate with the Rx as opposed to the Gum or Patch? Will these new treatments eventually make their OTC counterparts obsolete? Could those prescriptions gain OTC status as well?
This article was designed to identify customers and sell more product, But it raised those questions in my head, and I welcome any other responses or opinions in the comments.

Got something to say?

it could be the placebo effect.. some people think that if its a prescription drug… it will work better.. and they have a greater chance at quitting than some OTC product taht anyone can buy.
